What We Believe About:

God:  We believe in God and we love God.  We believe that God is infinitely compassionate and unconditionally loving, the Beloved Creator of all things, including us.  God is Spirit, the one power and one presence in the Universe, all good, everywhere present.  God is divine energy, continually creating, expressing, and sustaining all creation.

Some other ways we speak of God are as Life, Light, Love, Substance, Principle, and Universal or Divine Mind.  God is the Source of everything.  If we experience any lack in any aspect of our lives, we bring our attention back to Source, to God.

Especially, we believe that God loves you, so you can belong here, knowing God as Love, Goodness, and Sustenance, not as judging or condemning.

The Nature of Humankind: We are each, individual, eternal expressions of God.  Our essential nature is divine and therefore inherently good.  Our purpose is to express our divine potential as realized and demonstrated by Jesus. The more we awaken to our divine nature, the more fully God expresses in and through our lives.

We see each person as whole, rather than broken, and encourage you to find a home in our church community and to have your own relationship with God, the Source and Sustenance of your life.

Jesus: We believe that Jesus fully expressed his divine potential and sought to show humankind how to express ours as well.  We see Jesus as a master teacher of universal truths and as our Way Shower.  In Unity, we use the term Christ to mean the divinity in humankind.  Jesus is our great example of the Christ in expression, rather than the only exception, because he lived completely from his God consciousness (mindset) and awareness.

The Bible: We read the Bible, a life-long spiritual resource for us, metaphysically and mystically.  We honor the Bible as a reflection of the faith, understanding, and inspiration of its writers and as a collection of ancient writings that represent our spiritual awakening.  Our Bible study is a often an inward, contemplative journey that guides our souls and connects us to all humanity. 

Prayer and Meditation: We pray to align ourselves with God, to know the Truth, to change ourselves, as well as to transform our lives and transform our world.  We pray as Jesus taught, believing that it is God’s great desire to give us the kingdom.  We pray knowing that the Kingdom of God is among us and within us.  Furthermore, when we pray in Jesus’s name, we pray to affirm the same Christ consciousness (anointed mindset and awareness) that Jesus fully demonstrated, not to worship him as a deity.

We believe that affirmative prayer is the highest form of creative thought, which helps us release counterproductive, negative thoughts so we can maintain a positive, spiritual mindset.  Through meditation, sometimes described as listening to God, we experience the presence of God and connect to the innate wisdom within us.

Baptism/Christening: We practice these both literally and symbolically.  While baptism or christening by water represents cleansing the soul, we don’t believe that anything about us is broken or unclean.  Rather, we believe that a baptism or christening enlivens the power of God within us and activates the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives.  Each of us can have a spiritual baptism when we align ourselves with the spirit of God.  

Communion: Communion reminds us of our divinity and our ever-abiding connection with God.  When we take communion, we can know the truth that we are one of God’s Beloveds, just as Jesus was.  And whenever we share in the ritual of eating the bread and drinking the wine, we can more fully recognize our own Christ (anointed) nature and our ability to live from that nature, just as Jesus did.

Bread—the bread of life—represents divine substance, the life source which animates everything in our world.  Wine—the fruit of the vine—which can be a symbol for blood, represents the divine life energy and joy which flow within us, through us, and as us.
